TOP PEOPLE CONFIRM THE POP FANS’ VERDICT ON SUPREMES

DIANA ROSS and The Supremes were entertained last Sunday as guests of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford who had taken over the Dell ’Aretusa Club, London, for the occasion. The Duke and Duchess cut short their skiing holiday in Meribel in order to return to Britain to meet the group. When the girls appeared at the Talk of the Town the room was packed with people like Michael Caine, Laurence Harvey, Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, Paul McCartney and his girlfriend Jane Asher, Joan Collins and Samantha Egar.

Also present were two members of the World Cup team, Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore, with their wives. Diana Ross told me that their records — they are published here by EMI on the Tamla Motown label — sell well in Tokyo, Munich and Hong Kong. Audiences around the world are irresistibly caught up by the “Supreme experience.”

Last summer saw two significant changes in the trio. Diana Ross became the group’s lead singer and was joined by Cindy Birdsong, a member of Pattie and the Bluebells for six years. “Early in 1964,” said Diana Ross, “we were welcomed by teenagers, disc jockeys and just plain music lovers.”

It was at this time that The Supremes “caught fire” and their records began to sell at a fast rate. They were awarded seven gold records in less than two years and in fact they performed the incredible feat of having five consecutive records reach the No. 1 spot in the best selling charts, an achievement unmatched by any other American group.

Diana Ross added: “The girls are absolutely the greatest and will sing on the slightest provocation.”

The Supremes have toured the globe and entertained in almost every nation in the world. Success, for these unassuming girls — each of them are in their early twenties — has meant appearing in a broad selection of the world’s finest night clubs and television programmes.

On television The Supremes have been featured as guest artistes on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Dean Martin Show, The Sammy Davis Junior Show, The Red Skelton Hour, Hollywood Palace Hulaballo and The Johnny Carson Show. In addition they have appeared — as was the case last Sunday — on the London Palladium Show. The Supremes have even played dramatic roles in the Tarzan television series.

Cindy Birdsong, newest member of the group, comes from Camden, New Jersey. Diana recalled: “We all started singing when we were kids,” and Mary Wilson added: “It gave us a sense of direction which was denied to so many other kids with whom we grew up.”

Diana, Mary and Cindy share one thing in common. It is their desire and determination to live in a world of music.
