Paul McCartney rehearses “Step Inside Love” with Cilla Black

Last updated on August 25, 2024

Two days before the broadcast of the first episode of “Cilla“, a BBC TV program hosted by singer Cilla Black, Paul McCartney rehearsed with her “Step Inside Love“, the song he had written to serve as the musical theme of the program. At this point, the song only consisted of one verse and a chorus.

Cilla Black and Paul McCartney had previously recorded a demo of “Step Inside Love” and a first version with orchestra, on November 21, 1967.

When Paul said he’d write a theme for the series and a song just for me, I took it with a pinch of salt. I’d heard it all before. But he came up with this one, played it over on his guitar to me a couple of times, and that was it. I went around singing it for days after.
