A day before the 56th Grammy Awards, The Beatles were honoured with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The day started with Paul McCartney attending the Grammy Charity Signings, where he was photographed with rapper Eminem. From MTV News, January 25, 2014:
With his blond crop shielded by a cap and camo hoodie, Em managed what I can only describe as a cross between a scowl and a smile as a jovial McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, locked arms with the Detroit spitter and a silver-clad companion. It’s unclear where they are, in the Instagram posted by Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson, though a mirror in the background suggests a dressing room somewhere in Los Angeles.
In the afternoon, Paul McCartney rehearsed “Queenie Eye” with Ringo Starr, ahead of their performance at the 56th Grammy Awards.
In the evening, Paul McCartney didn’t join the ceremony honouring the Beatles, apparently still busy with rehearsals. Ringo Starr, Yoko One and Olivia Harrison accepted the award on behalf of the group.
This year we pay tribute to exceptional creators who have made prolific contributions to our culture and history. It’s an honor and a privilege to recognize such a diverse group of talented trailblazers, whose incomparable bodies of work and timeless legacies will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
Neil Portnow, Recording Academy President/CEO
It’s a lifetime achievement award but I happen to think we’ve got a lot more life left in us. It’s a great afternoon; it’s all about music. The Beatles’ music is still out there and that’s what I’m most proud of.
Ringo Starr
Here’s something you probably know: George was my favorite Beatle. But here’s something you might not know. Aside from their music — as people — they are the most supportive and generous friends in my life. The Beatles are extraordinary people, and I’m thankful to be part of this extraordinary family.
Olivia Harrison
