In anticipation of Paul McCartney’s concerts in Madrid on December 9 and 10, 2024, the nonprofit organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched a digital campaign at bus stops along Madrid’s Gran Vía. The campaign features the message: “I am Paul McCartney, and I am against bullfighting.”
Paul McCartney has been a long-standing activist against animal suffering in collaboration with PETA.
From Sir Paul McCartney’s Anti-Bullfighting Appeal Takes Over Madrid’s Gran Vía, December 10, 2024:
Ahead of his upcoming tour dates in Madrid, Sir Paul McCartney is calling on everyone to come together and put an end to cruel bullfights. The music legend features on digital screens lighting up the Spanish capital’s most famous street, Gran Vía, with a can’t-be-missed message: “I am Paul McCartney, and I oppose bullfighting.”
Why Sir Paul McCartney Stands Against Bullfighting
Bulls feel pain and fear just as humans do, but in the bullring, they’re terrorised, mutilated, and barbarically slaughtered in front of jeering crowds.
During bullfights, assailants on horses drive lances into a bull’s back and neck before others plunge banderillas into his back. When the bull becomes weak from blood loss, a matador attempts to kill the animal by plunging a sword into his lungs. A knife is used to cut his spinal cord. The bull may be paralysed but still conscious as his ears or tail are cut off and presented to the matador as a trophy and his body is dragged from the arena.
Sir Paul McCartney is taking a stand against this violence, and PETA is urging compassionate people everywhere to join him.
Spanish Citizens Oppose Bullfighting
Not only is bullfighting condemned internationally, but opposition continues to grow in Spain, where 93% of young people say they don’t support the cruel spectacles.
PETA’s ad blitz comes as animal rights advocates in Spain gather signatures for the No Es Mi Cultura popular legislative initiative. The citizen-led campaign, called “It Is Not My Culture”, seeks to repeal the law that designates bullfighting as “cultural heritage”, which leads to government funding for the despicable blood sport and prevents Spanish municipalities from making their own choices regarding prohibiting it.
Take Action Against Cruelty to Bulls
In nature, bulls are calm, social individuals who are protective of their fellow herd members. But in bullfights, they are mercilessly tormented and killed. Tens of thousands are slaughtered this way annually in bullfighting festivals around the world.
More than 100,000 PETA supporters have called for an end to this cruelty. Join them in urging Spain’s prime minister to ban bullfighting!
