The National Portrait Gallery in London exhibited a temporary photography collection called “Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64 Eyes of The Storm” from June 28 to October 1, 2023. The exhibition showcased a series of photographs taken by Paul McCartney himself from December 1963 to February 1964. These photographs coincided with the emergence of Beatlemania and were published in a photography book titled “1964: Eyes Of The Storm” in June 2023.
Following its showcase in London, the exhibition travelled to Norfolk, Brooklyn, Tokyo, Portland, Osaka and San Francisco.
Between April and June 2025, a selection of 36 photographs from “Eyes of the Storm” was exhibited at the Gagosian art gallery in Beverly Hills. What set this exhibition apart was that, for the first time, these photos were available for purchase in limited edition prints, each personally signed by Paul McCartney.
Paul McCartney signed the prints in February 2025, during a week in New York, where he also performed three impromptu concerts and made a special appearance on the SNL 50th anniversary special.
From Paul McCartney, Beverly Hills, April 25–June 21, 2025 | Gagosian:
Gagosian is pleased to announce an exhibition of recently rediscovered photographs by Paul McCartney—including some previously unseen—at its gallery in Beverly Hills. Featuring thirty-six works composed of images taken between December 1963 and February 1964, it offers an indelible snapshot of Beatlemania as it was becoming a global phenomenon. McCartney has collaborated with Gagosian to produce the prints in small editions and has signed each one. Incorporating pictures shot in Liverpool; London; Paris; New York; Washington, DC; and Miami, the exhibition is on view from April 25 to June 21, 2025. A portion of sale proceeds will be donated to support ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts in Southern California following the recent devastating wildfires.
Evoking a key interval in twentieth-century cultural history, the photographs embody a poignant intersection of time, place, and personality. Taken together, they form a significant contribution to the visual record of the era, not only due to their unique perspective, but also because they demonstrate McCartney’s natural talent as a photographer. The mix of black-and-white and color prints includes self-portraits, unguarded portraits of McCartney’s bandmates, and views of the pandemonium that greeted them at every turn. Some of the most compelling photographs portray dramatic scenes glimpsed through the windows of moving vehicles as McCartney and his fellow Beatles were whisked from one appearance to the next.
The exhibition in Beverly Hills is designed by Stefan Beckman, who previously worked with the gallery on exhibition designs for Avedon 100 at Gagosian New York (2023) and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian Beverly Hills (2024). It coincides with the touring exhibition Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm, which debuted at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2023 and will open at the de Young Museum in San Francisco on March 1, 2025.
From Paul McCartney’s Beatlemania-Era Photographs Go on Sale at Gagosian, February 19, 2025:
In April, Gagosian’s Beverly Hills location will showcase a collection of singer-songwriter Paul McCartney‘s rediscovered photographs, shot during the height of Beatlemania. But, unlike the pictures from last year’s exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, these prints will be for sale. […]
The photographs, shot in Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, and other cities, are presented as small, signed editions, with a portion of the proceeds supporting wildfire recovery efforts in Southern California. Prices range from $12,000 to high five figures.
The prints were skillfully made at Griffin Editions, the Brooklyn photo studio famous for printing work by many renowned photographers and artists, including Cindy Sherman, Alec Soth, Danny Lyon, Jamel Shabazz, and David Salle, among others.
Designed by Stefan Beckman, who worked with the gallery on exhibition designs for Avedon 100 at Gagosian New York in 2023 and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian Beverly Hills in 2024, the exhibit runs from April 25 to June 2. It also coincides with the McCartney’s exhibition, titled, Eyes of the Storm, which debuted at London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2023 and heads to San Francisco’s de Young Museum in March.
The cat’s out of the bag! What an immense privilege it’s been to work with @paulmccartney and his team to create a limited run of Paul’s photographs to be offered @gagosian this spring. Shot with a 35mm Pentax during a pivotal three months in 1963-64 that launched @thebeatles as a global phenomenon, the pictures bear witness to one of the most consequential cultural shifts of the past century, from the inside looking out.
Drawn from original material recently rediscovered in Paul’s archive, each image was scrupulously remastered and printed to the highest standard by @griffin_editions. In between popup shows @boweryballroom and preparations for his epic appearance that closed out SNL 50, Sir Paul made time to inspect and sign the initial batch of prints. We couldn’t be more proud of this collaboration.
