BEATLES PLAN NEW SINGLE

THE Beatles have now recorded a total of five tracks since the completion of their “Sgt. Pepper” album. Two or three more titles will be cut this month, and these — together with the song which they are writing specially for the world-wide TV hook-up on June 25 — will form a pool from which the two numbers for their next single will be selected. It is tentatively planned to have a new Beatles single on the market next month.

The new Beatles’ album enters the NME Chart at No. 26 this week, despite the fact that it was not officially released until yesterday (Thursday). This is because EMI has been making an advance limited distribution, and the disc has been available in some areas for a week.

BEATLES’ NEW SINGLE

A SURPRISE new single from the Beatles! It’s called “All You Need Is Love”, the Lennon and McCartney song they wrote for the Our World TV spectacular screened last Sunday. Release date is July 7.

Tapes were rushed to New York within 48 hours of the Sunday night recording session. Parlophone plans to have copies in all British shops within two weeks.

The second side of the single is called “Baby You’re A Rich Man”, another Lennon and McCartney song originally intended for the soundtrack of the Beatles’ cartoon film now in production called Yellow Submarine.

The Beatles are backed by 13 session men and John added his final vocal tracks during the live TV transmission. It was the first time Lennon and McCartney have written a new composition for a specific occasion — a historic TV production seen by 400,000,000 people in 24 countries.

Both songs feature John, Paul and George dividing vocal work, although John takes the lead.

Their last single “Penny Lane” was issued four months ago. Says a Beatle spokesman: “By this time last year the Beatles had only released one single. In 1967 they have released two singles and an LP, in four months. It’s the most prolific output rate since the early days of the Beatles in 1963.”

The Beatles have modified plans for their one hour TV spectacular due to be filmed in colour. They were going to use material from “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” but they will concentrate on recording new compositions and the TV special will be shot between now and August.

The show is to be devised and produced by the Beatles with guest artists. The Beatles also plan new album for release in the autumn.

“ALL You Need Is Love” the Lennon/McCartney song specifically written for the “Our World” television broadcast last Sunday evening is to be one side of a surprise rush-release BEATLES single. World-wide release will be almost simultaneous. Tapes were being rushed to New York and other centres overseas within 48 hours of Sunday night’s recording session. Parlophone plan to have copies in shops all over the U.K. within the next two weeks.

It has orchestral accompaniment supplied by thirteen session musicians. John added the final vocal track to the recording during the live “Our World” transmission. This is the first time Lennon and McCartney have written a new composition for a specific occasion, in this case a historic television production seen by over people in 24 countries.

Second side of the single will be “Baby You’re A Rich Man” another Lennon/ McCartney number written very recently and originally intended to be one of three recordings for use in the sound track of the full length BEATLES cartoon film now in production under the tentative title “Yellow Submarine”.

Both numbers feature John, Paul and George dividing the vocal work between them, although on each recording John is lead singer. “Penny Lane”, the most recent Beatles single, was issued four months ago on February 17. At this time last year they had issued only one 1966 single. In 1967 they have produced two singles plus a complete album and released them during a four month period. Sixteen new compositions in all – their most prolific record output rate since the earliest days of their recording career at the beginning of 1963.

Round-the-globe release, July-August on TV spec – BEATLES WORLD TV SINGLE

A NEW Beatles’ single is being rush-released next week – “All You Need Is Love,” the song they featured in the world-wide TV hook-up “Our World” last Sunday. The record is officially scheduled for July 7 issue but it is expected that many shops will receive supplies by next Wednesday. Overseas release will be almost simultaneous. Tapes have already been rushed to New York and other foreign centres. The track is the actual recording 600 million tele-viewers in 24 countries saw being made.

Flip side is “Baby You’re A Rich Man,” one of the numbers the Beatles had in mind for their already reported cartoon film. This will now be replaced in the movie. Both numbers are Lennon-McCartney compositions and both feature John as lead singer.

This means that the group will have had two singles and an LP released in the first six months of this year, as opposed to one single the same period of 1966. The Beatles have now started work on another album for which early autumn release is expected.

The Beatles will devote most of July and August to the preparation and eventual filming of their hour-long colour spectacular, which will be devised and produced by them. However, the original plan to base the show on the “Sgt. Pepper” LP has been scrapped because the album will no longer be topical by that time.

John and Paul have already written a theme song around which the show will be built — this may be released as a single to coincide with the screening of the show.

They will write several more new numbers for the spectacular, which will also include several existing compositions. Guest artists may be invited to take part in the production.

THE BEATLES: “All You Need Is Love” (Parlophone)

A cool, calculated contagious Beatles’ singsong once again from the pen of John and Paul, recorded — and plugged — before four million viewers on the BBC’s Our World satellite-linked programme. Obviously the group have decided to make a fairly straightforward, very commercial song and although it’s a beautiful sound it is easier to absorb than the more complex “Strawberry Fields.” The message is “love” and I hope everyone in the whole wide world manages to get it. The flip “Baby, You’re A Rich Man” shows you the kind of wealth that will be yours if you get the message. A pleasing B-side that’ll score a lot of plays when we’ve all got to know the A-side inside out.

THE BEATLES All You Need Is Love; Baby You’re A Rich Man (Parlophone 5620). This is not only an obvious number one — it’s a record which is likely to go on for ever. John sings the very repetitive Iyrics after an intro from the French national anthem or something, brassily laid down. There’s a choral sound, touches of violent guitar. and a finale which for me goes on a bit but is good-humoured and includes snatches of “American Patrol”, “She Loves You”, etc, etc. Very catchy and involving a world message. Flip: Some will prefer this, oddly enough — and it is odd enough. Interesting sounds all the way.

BEATLES CRASH BACK INTO CHART AT NO. 3

THE Beatles are back in the chart. Their new single “All You Need Is Love” leaped to number three in the MM’s Pop 30 this week — just three days after its official release date.

A spokesman for EMI Records told the MM on Monday: ” The record has sold almost 300,000 copies already.”

“All You Need Is Love” is the record the Beatles were seen recording by over 400 million viewers round the world in the BBC’s Our World programme.

A spokesman for Nems said: “There is no news for the Beatles at present. There is nothing on the TV spectacular or their third film.”

“All You Need Is Love” is the Beatles first single since “Strawberry Fields Forever”/ “Penny Lane ” in March and April.

THE Beatles are back at the top! Their “All You Need Is Love” climbed to number one this week — dislodging the Monkees, the group based on the early Beatles formula.

“All You Need Is Love” is the song that 400 million people round the world watched the Beatles working on in the studios as part of the “Our World” TV programme.

A spokesman for Nems told the MM on Monday: “Apart from the record’s success there is absolutely no fresh news about the group at the moment.”

George Harrison said on Monday: “Fab. Gear. It’s great you know because we never really expect these things to happen.”

Ringo commented: “We’ve got love.”
