From The Beatles Monthly Book, N°254, June 1997:

Although not a record collector himself, Paul McCartney isn’t averse to the concept of rarities, even going as far as deliberately pressing collectables of his own. A prime example is a new promotional-only white-label vinyl edition of Flaming Pie, which Paul put together in America as a gift for friends and fellow celebrities. The record MPL/Masterdisc 032 597) comes in a custom sleeve featuring Paul’s hand-drawn Pie logo and each LP comes with a typed letter, signed by Paul himself.

Just 200 copies were pressed, and it was Paul who decided to whom each copy should be sent. George, Ringo, producer Jeff Lynne, and Pie collaborator Steve Miller would seem obvious recipients, but rumour has it that Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Callagher have also received copies. As did High Fidelity author Nick Hornby, who’s known to be a favourite of Paul’s. Or at least we can assume as much after Paul ordered a whole box of Hornby’s record-collecting-friendly novel, which he is said to have distributed around his MPL offices. Although it’s unlikely that many copies will come up for sale, our sister publication Record Collector estimated a value for this exclusive edition to be £500. This figure is probably more accurate than the £12,000 quoted by sources such as The People and Virgin Radio in May!

Please find enclosed a white label vinyl advance copy of my new album “Flaming Pie”.

Only 200 have been pressed and sent to “extremely groovy” people such as yourself. Linda and I hope it brings you a moment or two of joy. We also hope you have a record player – and if not, why not get one! Failing that, I understand that when warmed up it can be made into a rather attractive plant pot holder.

Love.
