NEW LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION OF SEVEN-INCH SINGLES CUT FROM THE MASTER TAPES

We are proud to announce the release of this collectible box set presenting 46 tracks on 23 7-inch vinyl singles, in faithfully reproduced international picture sleeves, accompanied by a 40-page booklet with photos, ephemera, and detailed essays by Beatles historian Kevin Howlett.

These singles, plus an exclusive new double A-side single for the mid-1990s-issued tracks “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love,” are newly remastered from their original master tapes and cut for vinyl at Abbey Road Studios for a new limited edition boxed set.

From Sean Magee Talks Through His Process of Remastering The Beatles: The Singles Collection – YouTube:

Kevin Howlett: we’re in the room where the Beatles records were cut in the 60s by a cutting engineer called Harry Moss. You sat here and cut the Beatles singles for this new collection that’s out now. We’ve had recent releases where there’s been remixing from the multitrack tapes. This is a completely different approach to that project, isn’t it? You’re going for authenticity in this project.

Sean Magee: Exactly we use the original cutting masters prepared by Harry Moss which he used to cut the singles from and with a little bit of EQ to allow off the factor of these tapes being 50 years old. We then cut them to vinyl. The obvious thing to do actually with the singles is to do the more analogue.

Kevin Howlett: There’s been painstaking research involved in creating this boxset. Starting off first of all by listening very very carefully to the original singles.

Sean Magee: We have them as our reference so we know how the fade should be at the end, you know, what they sound like. Your point of reference is what ended up in the shops because that’s what we’re trying to create.

Kevin Howlett: The great thing about when you approach a project like this is that you can get access to the original master tapes and they’ve been preserved very well over the years.

Sean Magee: Originally in the sixties, these singles would have been on singles reels and there would have been a number of singles from various artists. And in the 70s, with all the Beatles success, it was decided that these Beatles singles will be cut out from the singles reels and put on their own individual reels and it’s stored in a secure area. I made digital copies of them to work from so if I’m going to be test cutting and try EQ the last thing we want to do is put 50-year old tapes on there and keep on moving forward and backward. I make a high-res copy of it, I can do my work and then when I’m happy with the test, then go back to the tape, from there cut it. You know we reduce the wear on it. These things are of historical value, they are priceless really. So you want to use them as little as possible.

Kevin Howlett: You had the advantage of course of being armed with the original paperwork from the 1960s. So what sort of notes did Harry Moss have on his original documents which have all been thankfully preserved at Abbey Road.

Sean Magee: They were like what he used with his EQ to get these tracks cut and we use them as a basis.

Kevin Howlett: You can have some improvement because Harry had to worry about a needle jumping out of the groove, because of a bit too much bass. That’s not a worry for you anymore.

Sean Magee: No. His task was to cut them as loud as possible and we don’t have that because firstly we’re not trying to compete with anybody. These aren’t going in a jukebox, we’re not worried about levels. What we’re worried about is that the cleanliness of the sound. We also have the benefit of a far much more modern equipment which is able to reproduce more faithfully what’s on the tape, as well as better handling of the noise these days. So we’re not fighting with the noise floor as much as we would have been potentially in the sixties.

Kevin Howlett: Well the lathe you’re using dates from the 1980s.

Sean Magee: Oh yes 1984 a Neumann VMSAT.

Kevin Howlett: Is that a superior lathe to what Harry would have used in the 60s so you can actually bring out more frequencies?

Sean Magee: Yes, it’s more precise, it’s more detailed and it’s a much easier machine to use. I think Harry would have been quite pleased with it.

Kevin Howlett: There are two instances where you did decide to cut from digital masters, “Love Me Do” and “She Loves You”. Why?

Sean Magee: Well we had to reconstruct simply because there isn’t the tape of that particular recording of the song. It was taken from a pair of seven inches. One was an original UK pressing, there was some distortion in the harmonica solo, so we had to add in a second from the pressing in Sweden and amalgamate the two. “She Loves You” has always had this sort of [inaudible]. At some point I think that maybe the tape got hurt, and someone has tacked it back together again because there’s a different level drop, and that level drop isn’t present on the original. And so instead, we digitized that one track and then do the edit so to fix it.

Kevin Howlett: I’ve heard another reissue that was done in 1976 and you hear that very clearly, the level drops, the EQ changes. But you are always listening to the original 1960s pressing to get it to sound…

Sean Magee: Exactly that. Those those were our point of reference. The whole point of the job was to have a box of the original as near to the original sixties pressings as possible.

Kevin Howlett: And the other digital transfers were obviously “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love” because they were made in the 1990s. So there is no analog tape for those.

Sean Magee: No. “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, they are digital so I use the original tapes of those.

Kevin Howlett: These are monumental singles and everybody involved really put a lot of time and effort into making them as faithful as possible to how they were heard in the first place.

Sean Magee: And good fun it was

Kevin Howlett: Yes let’s not forget it was not only a great privilege to do this but enormous fun to hear this music come alive again on 7-inch records
