Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman on holiday in Portugal
December 11 - Before Christmas 1968
Jotta Herre was a Portugues band, formed by Jaime João, Anibal Cunha, Carlos Pinto and the teclista Rui Pereira who animated the nights of the hotel The Penina, in the Algarve region in Portugal.
On a day in December 1968, Paul McCartney
shortly after midnight, they met with Paul McCartney at the hotel reception. The Beatle was staying in the area, at Hunter Davies’ house, and went to The Penina, with Linda Eastman, future woman, to exchange pounds for shields. After a first conversation they went to the bar where McCartney accompanied the group, to drums or to the piano, and offered them, already around 4 a.m., the song “Penina”.
The famous golfer Henry Cotton, the correspondent of the “Daily Express”, witnessed the entire episode that was reported on January 9, with the title “Beatle Paul writes a £20,000 holiday tip“.
— What meaning do you attribute, as an isolated individual and as a member of the society that is your whole, to the appearance and release of “Penina”? — I have only one regret: that we have to involve in this the name of Paul McCartney and the friendship that he offered us. But, in truth, he also forced us to do so. And, in a letter he sent us, he tells us categorically: «Use my name without hesitation: use it for your publicity.” And, finally, the commercial entities linked to the release of the record knew about this and took advantage of the idea. You see: Paul’s name has a well-established market and it is assumed that it will be commercially As for the results… it’s still too early to predict.
