It is this process of getting away from music and doing other things that lets me stay really into music. I need relief from music so that I can appreciate it when I have the chance to partake. Just thinking about playing makes me feel more at home.

My friend Paul [McCartney] feels the same way. He loves music but has to get away from it to stay vital with it. It is certainly a balancing act. Paul and I are friends because we both knew and loved Linda, who I met first during Buffalo Springfield days. Linda was a wonderful girl and lady. Today we are in touch periodically and talk about music or whatever. I like Paul a lot. He played at the Bridge School Benefit for us a few years ago and was really great. He reminds me a little of a modern-day Charlie Chaplin, the way he moves and the attention he pays to his art.

From Gijsbert Hanekroot on Facebook – Neil Young is celebrating his 77th birthday today and I hope he does so in all good health. It’s needless to say that the pictures I shot with him during the seventies are an important part of my archive. A lot of them made during private moments and even one of my live shots made it as an album cover. To celebrate his birthday I post this ‘paparazzi picture’, made on the 24th March 1976, when Neil played Ahoy Rotterdam with Crazy Horse and Paul and Linda McCartney came to visit him backstage. The McCartney’s played the same venue with their band Wings the next day. McCartney and Young didn’t play together that night, but years later, in 2009, Paul made an amazing surprise appearance at a Young show in Hyde Park.
