The Beatles’ Autumn tour of 1963 was at a time of “real, unstoppable, all-conquering Beatlemania” (Mark Lewisohn, The Complete Beatles Chronicle, 1992, p. 93). Earlier that month the Beatles had made a celebrated appearance at the Royal Variety Performance (see previous lot). The Beatles’ two appearances at the Sunderland Empire Theatre (6 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.) on 30 November were part of “the group’s fourth package tour around Britain in ten months, visiting 34 towns, two ‘houses’ per night…” (see Lewisohn, p. 93).
