Line-up Discover Backing band 1989-1990
From Chris Whitten (@chriswhittenmusic) • Instagram photos and videos – We were never to be found backstage after the show. We always did ‘a runner’. While the crowd was demanding “more” and the lights were still down, we ran off the stage and into Town Cars or a tour bus. Typically on our way to an airport and a flight to a quiet, remote hotel near the next show location. I must say it rankled with me. We were playing amazing shows, but afterwards we were traveling, then winding up in a deserted hotel at 1am. Famously after our Madison Square Garden NYC show Bill Murray was found wandering backstage looking for Paul and the band. He ended up inviting some of our crew to his favourite Manhattan bar and they all had an incredible time. Anyway….. here’s my photo of keyboard maestro Wix, on the bus, running from the Berkeley show, March 1990. We were obviously handed 49ers caps before the final encore as we are all still wearing them on the bus. #thebayarea #49ers #paulmccartney #touringlife #leica
From Chris Whitten (@chriswhittenmusic) • Instagram photos and videos – At the end of March 1990 we were back in The USA, travelling down the west coast, then across to Florida, nine shows in just over two weeks. Apparently I handed my camera to other people on occasion. Here I am, about a week after my 31st birthday, being interviewed on KALX UC Berkeley radio. We used to drop in to college radio sometimes – just for fun. We didn’t need to publicise the tour. I was very happy to be in Berkeley. I was a fan of America and had started to spend a lot of time in both SF and LA. The Bay Area had a lot of romance for me. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and was aware of The Summer Of Love, Haight Ashbury. Tremendous student protests and calls for radical change out of Berkeley University. I loved The Steve Miller Band, Sly Stone, Herbie Hancock and Narada Michael Walden, all of whom had associations with The Bay Area. I remembered Berkeley featuring in the movie The Graduate. By 1990 Berkeley was a hot bed of intellectuals and creative talent from The Arts and culinary world. #paulmccartney #touringlife #kalx #berkeley #leicam6

i went to the april 1st concert.

on august 19, 1965 i i had seen the beatles at the cow palace. the exciters left the stage and from my seat the maybe 8” tall fab four appeared - then the flashbulbs and the wail of screams took over.

so i had wondered where’d we be seated. we got our fab concert magazines, handed our tickets to an usher and entered the stadium. following his lead we ended in row G, on the ground, directly in front of the small stage.

baby, we were amazed…
