From Chris Whitten (@chriswhittenmusic) • Instagram photos and videos – My final roll of 35mm film from the @paulmccartney tour, July 1990. Hamish, Linda and Paul being filmed at Foxboro, Mass for the somewhat ill advised tour movie ‘Get Back’. Not Peter Jackson’s ‘Get Back’, Dick Lester’s 1990 tour movie. It was shot on film and as such required large cameras, huge amounts of heavy equipment and extra lights. It was either dangerous to the audience or got in their way. So whole sequences for the movie were shot during the day before the show. This sequence has is being filmed after dark, so I can’t remember if we filmed the day before our show at Foxboro? As we recorded full studio audio at every soundcheck and show during the tour, the film makers decided to film unconnected sequences at different venues along the tour, resulting in the final movie featuring us with different haircuts, even different clothes within one song. Usually a tour movie will be shot at one or two shows. Needless to say, the ‘Get Back’ tour movie was not a success with either fans or critics and hasn’t been seen or heard of since. Which is tragic as the show itself was amazing
From Chris Whitten (@chriswhittenmusic) • Instagram photos and videos – My portrait of Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. Taken on the 27th July or 28th July 1990, probably on an airfield apron in Chicago. 29th July marked the final show of Paul’s 89/90 world tour. Lots of people who had been involved in the tour gathered to witness the last show and attend an end of tour party which had been arranged at the Soldier Field venue. Po famously co-founded Hipgnosis in 1968 with Storm Thorgerson, responsible for iconic album artwork such as Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. Powell was made creative director of the @paulmccartney 89/90 tour, designing the stage set, video wall and film footage projected during the show.
