From paulmccartney.com, July 16, 2009:
Paul McCartney’s return to the Ed Sullivan Theater for an outdoor performance on the theater’s marquee yesterday captured on The Late Show With David Letterman drew a crowd that packed Broadway from Times Square to Columbus Circle.
Fans were treated not only to “Get Back” and “Sing The Changes” taped for the Late Show broadcast but to a veritable mini-concert, as Paul and the band thundered through “Coming Up,” “Band On The Run,” “Let Me Roll It,” “Helter Skelter” and “Back In The USSR.” As the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reported in a cover story “Paul McCartney still made them twist and shout when he returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater 45 years after he and The Beatles first performed there.” […]
We were backstage at the Letterman Show half an hour before we were due to go on, and I was just scribbling down songs we might do,’ he says. ‘I was thinking, well, maybe we can play Get Back, maybe something from Driving Rain. It was great, seriously great. Can you imagine Madonna half an hour before a gig saying, you know what, let’s do Like A Virgin tonight?
Paul McCartney – From Daily Mail Online, January 17, 2010 – Praising his band, who can career through any of his solo songs, or any of the Beatles songs as though they recorded the originals
This was the 1st and only concert played at Ed Sullivan Theater.
